GREATER GREEN visits OIE biomass cogeneration plant

At the beginning of the 1st meeting of the GREATR GREEN working group "Smart Green Energy" the participants visited the OIE biomass combined heat and power plant (CHP) in Hoppstädten-Weiersbach. The OIE AG as the regional energy supplier operates the second largest biomass plant in Rhineland-Palatinate.

Günter Schiffmann, OIE Wärme, guided the eleven visitors on 11 February 2020 through the OIE biomass cogeneration plant and explained the most important facts and figures of the modern plant: "In our cogeneration plant, 60,000 tons of wood chips are thermally utilised every year, generating steam at a temperature of 450 degrees Celsius and a pressure of 63 bar. With an annual power generation of around 60 million kilowatt hours, the CHP is the largest feeder of renewable energy in the region. The electricity is fed into the medium-voltage grid and could supply around 20,000 households for a year. The heat generated should not be forgotten either: 16 million kilowatt hours are distributed annually via the connected district heating network. The district heating network with a route length of 8.2 kilometers supplies the surrounding commercial and industrial companies, such as the Umwelt-Campus, the Kreissiedlungsgesellschaft Birkenfeld GmbH or the Fissler company, with environmentally friendly heat.

On behalf of GREATER GREEN, Mr. Pornschlegel thanked the OIE's heat employee for the interesting guided tour: "We were able to convince ourselves of the innovative plant on site and learned a lot of interesting facts".
